TELLABS OFFICIALLY OPENS NEW PRODUCTION FACILITY IN FINLAND
State-of-the-Art Plant Will Assure MartisDXXT Growth Well Beyond 2000

Lisle, Ill. - A full day of special events is scheduled Wednesday in Finland as telecommunications
equipment manufacturer Tellabs officially opens its new production and research and design facility
in Espoo, near Helsinki.

Espoo is the home of Tellabs Oy, where Tellabs executives will join Finnish dignitaries in a "grand
opening" celebration of the new 154,000-square-foot building which accommodates more than
400 employees. Tellabs President and CEO Michael J. Birck and Tellabs International President
John E. Vaughan, along with Jukka Harju, vice president and general manager of Tellabs Oy, and
other Tellabs representatives will take part in the festivities that include a ribbon-cutting ceremony
Wednesday morning with Matti Aura, Finland's minister of transport and communications.

"The activities on Wednesday mark an exciting milestone for Tellabs in its continuing plan to
become one of the premier telecommunications equipment suppliers in the world," Birck said.
"Tellabs Oy, of course, is where we build our international flagship product, the MartisDXX
managed access and transport network system. This new ultramodern facility matches perfectly
with the high-quality workforce in Finland to assure efficient production of the MartisDXX product
portfolio well into the next century."

Tellabs acquired what was then called Martis Oy in the fall of 1993. Since then, annual sales of the
MartisDXX system have grown from US $40 million to almost $300 million in 1997, a
compounded annual growth rate of more than 65 percent. From Martis Oy's original seven
customers in five countries in 1993, Tellabs has expanded the customer base to more than 120
customers in 56 countries. More importantly, the MartisDXX system has expanded in four years
from an almost exclusively Nordic country-based application to a truly global solution.

"Enhancements to the MartisDXX product have been introduced regularly since 1993, and many
more are planned," Birck said. "With new products featuring optical technology and synchronous
network protocols now in development, this new facility provides us with the manufacturing
capacity and quality focus we must have to meet our goal of being a leading global supplier to the
dynamic telecom industry."

Of the approximately 154,000 square feet of space in the new structure, 97,000 are dedicated to
manufacturing, and the remaining 57,000 house a portion of Tellabs Oy's product design
organization. Tellabs also has manufacturing facilities in Shannon, Ireland; Bolingbrook, Illinois, and
Round Rock, Texas, each of which has undergone recent new construction.

Tellabs designs, manufactures, markets and services voice and data transport and network access
systems. The company's products are used worldwide by the providers of communications
services. Tellabs, Inc., stock is listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market (TLAB).

Tellabs and the Tellabs logo are registered U.S. trademarks of Tellabs Operations, Inc. in the United States
and/or in other countries.
MartisDXX is a trademark of Tellabs Oy.
A questiion for you if you have $600,000,000 in the bank and interest rates go up 1%,are you ahead or behind, assuming that such a nominal increase does not affect your orders for products that you produce.
