Here's a good quote from Dan Ross. He's right -- "technology EVOLVES -- that will determine who wins and who loses."

The basic feeling I have is that technology will evolve, but the cutting edge technology for The Net will be from firms that don't exist now.

Some current firms have a chance to survive -- obviously you can tell I think SEEK has a good shot. But overall, most currently publicly traded firms in this sector will die a long and horrible death.

Take eXcite (XCIT) -- their new ad campaign -- "Are you eXperienced?" This just isn't going to work. No one cares about Hendrix songs if the engine can't produce results.

Look at Yahoo (YHOO) -- there's an old Dylan lyric -- "those who are first will later be last." We're in the middle of a transition here. Yahoo was first, now they are mediocre, and soon they will be last.

CompuServe (CSRV) -- this never had a chance. Even if this type of on-line service really was the wave of the future, AOL is better in every possible way. Anyone still using this stuff will be with them.

E*TRADE (EGRP) -- wins award for BIGGEST LOSER. Terrible nasty customer service, not particularly good prices, slow executions.... there are SO MANY better on-line brokers -- e Broker, Datek, JB Oxford..... no one is going to use E*TRADE if they research all the options. The market has it priced so high because they think that electronic traders in general have a future. They don't know anything about the worthless company itself...

These shorts are 41% of my portfolio. I should make them >50%, so I can actually root for a stock market crash. And good shorts are so much easier to find! But I won't do that because I'm not that sadistic.
