ORACLE(r) DATABASE SERVER GROWS NT SHARE, MAINTAINING LEAD OVER MICROSOFT SQL SERVER FOR TWO YEARS IN A ROW

Oracle also Overtakes IBM to Lead in Overall Database Share

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., April 28, 1998--Continuing to strengthen its leading server position in both the NT and Unix market, Oracle Corp. today announced that Oracle(r) Database Server has, for the second year in a row, topped Microsoft SQL Server's market share on NT, according to the latest report of 1997 numbers by Dataquest, a leading research firm. Dataquest also reported that Oracle overtook IBM in overall database market share in 1997.
The independent analyst survey reports that in 1997, Oracle grabbed a
market-leading 41.5 percent share on the NT platform, while Microsoft
continued to trail for the second straight year with a 38.8 percent share.
Overall, the huge growth of Windows NT servers during last year saw databases make their strongest showings in the NT area, which resulted in a 1997 NT sales increase of 91 percent.
"Dominating in the NT space is a key factor in Oracle's overall
database strategy and the Dataquest figures serve as a clear validation to Oracle's commitment and superiority in NT," said Ken Jacobs, vice president of Database Server Marketing at Oracle Corp. "From the outset, we have aimed to offer our customers the most scalable, reliable and available databases that enable NT to support the enterprise, and this report is solid proof we are making good on our customer promise and providing a preferred solution to Microsoft's SQL Server or any others on the market."
Carolyn DiCenzo, director and principal analyst of Dataquest's
database and data warehousing worldwide program, said, "Oracle maintained its leadership position in an NT market that will continue to move forward and take a greater share until the overall database market becomes more balanced.
Competition in the NT market will only get more intense as companies battle
within the NT arena for market share and also go after Unix."
Dataquest also reported that Oracle's database market share overtook
IBM's OS/400 version of DB2, the leader in 1996. According to the report, Oracle's overall market share grew from 24.9 to 27.5 percent in 1997, as IBM's share failed to increase at all, remaining at its 1996 share of 27.2.
Microsoft was a distant third with 14.9 percent.
"Customers are evaluating and recognizing that Oracle's complete
database strategies and solutions are the most effective on the market. We'll continue to base our success on reality-and the reality is that more people are using Oracle databases," said Jarvis.
