Well I have been pricing PC's for many years and have never seen such a large gap between the no-name clones and Dell. A yr. ago there was such a thin spread it didn't make sense to go with a no-name. Now, the spread is so large it makes you wonder. Also, what is this attitude toward cheaper sub or 1k PC's. Dell wants to address this but the reality is, in my opinion, that they are scared that if they do, they will have to revamp their whole pricing structure.. I assume Dell thinks that if they close their eyes and wish the sub 1k market goes away it will. Reality is, with new and cheaper Pentiums coming out almost everyday, this will force them into this market. I know I was a CIS manager and had to buy 50 PC's for my company and it wasn't used for CAD, I would look twice at a $1,000 PC if I can save 300-500 per PC. Let see, hmmm 50*400=$20,000 savings..Wow, my boss will think I am a genius. Now he has enough money left over to buy that gazzion MHz Dell with 100mhz bus, 128meg, 19inch monitor, and yes a "Pinto Powered" Modem-56k just so he can play DOOM in true 3d. ??????????? |
