I can assure you that SGI's *current* product line is a good match for an Alpha machine (a good EV56-600MHz box). Mind you, the machine, not just the chip. And I don't think these products will stand still, or retrograde, before 2002.

You forgot Sun; they've jumped on the bandwagon too with Solaris-on-IA64.

Not married to Microsoft. For the gfx high-end, and servers, IRIX remains the strategic OS. Sun is porting Solaris to IA64 as well (well, it already runs on x86, but that's hardly a success), but I don't think you can seriously say that Scott is going to marry Bill Gates soon because of that ;).
Engaged to Intel, that would be another matter. SGI won't be married until the eating of the IA64 pudding has begun, though. |
