When does any of this stuff (Merced, McKinley, Everest et all) start taking away business from the mainframes and if it does how does that effect you personally at work?

It already is happening, but will accelerate with the new msft sql server due out this fall. The general wintel enterprise system will consist of a merced box (so far Dell has the best wintel enterprise servers, but Im not a hardware person), NT with the msft database product.

The enterprise software people have been moving from unix to NT for about a year, but the development effort is lengthy in our business and there were these unknowns that we were waiting on, NT 5.0 and sql server and for that matter a decent enterprise-level wintel server from one of the box makers. I don't think anyone will go live with a major enterprise implementation until Merced is available, because we need more processing power than we have.
