JUPITER COMMUNICATIONS OPENS LONDON RESEARCH OFFICE TO TRACK UNIQUE COURSE OF CONSUMER INTERNET ECONOMY IN EUROPE
04/28/98 -- NEW YORK, NY--Projecting that an elusive, slowly growing online market in Europe will evolve from 7 million to 37.5 million homes within five years, Jupiter Communications opened the doors of its London office and announced a new subscription program offering research to clients of its Strategic Planning Services (SPS).
The London-based European Internet Strategies practice will focus on strategic business models, technology evolution, and competitive analysis for consumer media, commerce, marketing, and telecom ventures. Jupiter's European operations will be directed by Phil Dwyer, who has become one of the most renowned experts on the evolving economics of new media in the UK and Europe (see below). Over the next several months the team of analysts assembled by Dwyer will produce advisory studies on Internet shopping, digital television, and the growth of regional markets.
"Jupiter's clients are hungry for new media research that shows an understanding of the distinct nature of the European online market, while conveying universal lessons and business models," said Kurt Abrahamson, president and COO at Jupiter Communications. "By bringing in Phil Dwyer and the professionals he has assembled, we now have the ability to offer our customers consumer research and advisory services in a combination that can't be matched anywhere else."
"There is no question that interactive media will be huge in Europe," said Phil Dwyer, managing director of Jupiter's London office. "But we may reach the same destination by a different route. In Europe, the online advertising revenues reached just $38 million last year, against the US's $1 billion market (a figure which Europe will not achieve for five years). Revenue hungry content owners will therefore be looking for creative new revenue streams for their sites, which will encourage rapid growth of digital commerce in Europe. The consumer use of the Internet is just starting to pick up steam in Europe, but will accelerate over the next five years. In such an active, productive market, Jupiter is well-poised to provide truly pertinent, relevant research to the European new media community."
The European Internet group draws on the strength of industry experience from analysts well-versed in specific areas of consumer online activity. The group is also intimately familiar with the cultural, linguistic, and societal differences embedded in country-specific as well as pan-European new media businesses.
