Greg, I think you missed Alexis' main point:

Alpha is a great CPU, no one is denying this. However
Alpha *systems* are way unbalanced. People don't
buy CPUs, they buy systems. For general application
performance you need more than a fast CPU: you need a fast
memory subsystem, fast I/O, fast networking, and above all
a good OS (especially in multiprocessor configs) when you
look at the full system, the SGI Origin beats Alpha based
systems by a factor of about 2:1.

For example: on a popular application like web serving
(which uses, I/O, network etc.) A 4-CPU DEC Alpha server
model 4100 5/466 gets 2304 ops/sec (DEC's best result ever)
while A 4-CPU Origin 2000 with "slower" 250 MHz processors
achieves 4501 ops/sec [source: www.spec.org]

Not to mention the fact that DEC doesn't publish SPECWeb
results on more than 4-CPUs since they probably don't scale-up
very well (the Origin's 8-CPU number is above 7200 ops/sec)
