Century Acquires More Than 10 Million Pops in LMDS Auction

MONROE, La.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 28, 1998--Century Telephone Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE Symbol: CTL) has been awarded 32 Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) licenses in the FCC's A and B band auction. With the purchase, Century gained approximately 10.6 million pops (the portion of the population of the service area based on ownership interest) paying an average price of $.92 per pop. Century's total investment will be approximately $9.7 million.

This technology will allow Century to offer wireless broadband services such as high-speed Internet/Intranet access, data transfer and video transmission. The LMDS spectrum blocks are significantly broader than other types of licensed spectrum.

The majority of the licenses complement existing Century operating areas, and cover 32 Basic Trading Areas (BTAs) in Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota and Mississippi.

"This purchase advances Century's strategies of offering consumers an array of bundled communications services and geographically clustering our markets," Glen F. Post, III, president and chief executive officer, said. "These licenses will give us another means for bringing advanced technology and services to rural areas and smaller cities in the United States."

Century Telephone Enterprises, Inc. provides a range of communications services including local exchange, wireless, long distance and Internet access to more than two million customers in 21 states. The company, headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana, is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CTL. Century is the 10th largest local exchange telephone company, based on access lines, and the 10th largest cellular company, based on population equivalents owned, in the United States.
