US West's DSL Rollout Hits a Snag

PC users in Oregon eagerly awaiting the rollout of Digital Subscriber Line service in that state will have to wait a while longer.
Oregon's public utilities commission has delayed for at least six months US West's plans for its Megabit DSL Service, which was scheduled to launch in June. According to John Hunter, an analyst
with market research firm Telechoice, US West failed to provide regulators with sufficient information on service quality and provisioning issues.
As Hunter describes it, "They thought just because they're the local incumbent they could come in and say they're offering megabit services and, with pent-up demand, everyone [would be] all goo-goo and ready to go for it."
Hunter adds, "Short term, [the delay is] a real lose/lose, but long term it keeps US West honest and provides the information that subscribers and the public need to make an informed ... decision."
US West says the Oregon hang-up is an isolated incident, and that DSL rollout plans in its other service areas are proceeding unimpeded.
