Hmmmm. But what is fair market value? Let's say you buy a call position and an equivalent put position in a very volatile stock that will be announcing earnings after the close. After the announcement, you move the winning position into your Roth at the 4:00 PM value, the fair market value. The next day you close the IRA and write off the losing position at the new fair market value.
