Inprise Announces Plans to Deliver Enterprise
Application Server to Simplify Distributed Computing

Company is Well-Positioned with Recognized Leadership in Visual
Development Tools and Object Middleware

SAN FRANCISCO, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Inprise Corporation (Nasdaq: BORL - news)
today announced its intent to develop and market the Inprise Application Server -- establishing
the new company as a leader in the growing market for integrated enterprise-scale development
tools, middleware, and distributed application management solutions. At the Inprise corporate
launch this morning at events in San Francisco, Toronto, London, Munich, and Sydney, Dr.
Richard LeFaivre, Inprise senior vice president of research and development, outlined the
company's market opportunity and technology advantage.

''Until now, it has been very difficult for corporations to build and manage distributed multi-tier
applications,'' LeFaivre said. ''Inprise plans to change that -- the integration of our
market-leading development tools, scalable middleware, and application management capability
will provide the only single-vendor, end-to-end solution for component-based enterprise
computing. Through our integration of these technologies, we believe that the Inprise enterprise
application server will provide the most advanced way to develop, deploy, and manage
standards-based distributed applications. We will allow IT organizations to focus on their own
strategic business objectives, instead of the complexities of middleware programming.''

''The adoption rate of distributed object computing will continue to grow explosively well into
the next century -- as more corporations recognize the demand for new, strategic information
systems that can integrate their heterogeneous enterprise,'' said Tony Picardi, group vice
president of Worldwide Software, of IDC, Framingham, Mass. ''Although the market for
application servers seems very crowded today, IT managers should only select the
development solutions that can address their needs for flexibility, scalability, reliability, and
performance. In its new position, Inprise has the right ingredients to become a successful,
leading vendor in this arena.''

Inprise -- Integrating the Enterprise

Inprise's distributed development tools and intelligent middleware are being used today in
hundreds of production enterprise-scale applications, in corporations such as British Telecom,
Charles Schwab, Daiwa Securities, Federal Express, First Union, Mercedes-Benz, Sprint,
State Street Bank, and T. Rowe Price.

''I think Inprise's approach with the application server is going to be right on for companies like
T. Rowe Price,'' said Tim Tully, senior vice president, application development, T. Rowe Price,
Baltimore, MD. ''The Inprise Application Server promises to hide the complexities of building
and managing distributed applications so that developers can work closely with business-line
managers to solve higher-level business issues that impact our bottom line.''

The Inprise Application Server

Leveraging the combined technology leadership of Borland International and Visigenic
Software, the Inprise application server is an integrated suite of enterprise middleware and tools
that provide a complete solution for simplifying the development, deployment, and management
of middle-tier business logic in a distributed application environment. Based on the company's
award-winning VisiBroker CORBA technology and integrating its industry-leading development
tools (JBuilder(TM), Delphi(TM) and C++Builder(TM)) and Inprise AppCenter(TM)
application management tool suite, Inprise's application server will include all essential
components for robust and reliable enterprise-scale computing environments, including object
communication, security, transactions, component monitoring, application management, and
database and legacy system integration.

''With its highly productive development tools and object-based infrastructure, Inprise is in a
very real position to be a key enterprise player over the next five years,'' said David Kelly, vice
president, research services, at the Hurwitz Group, Framingham, Mass. ''Many organizations
are evaluating CORBA and Java together as the technologies that will help glue together the
different pieces of their enterprise systems. We see application servers and component
development as being a critical way to do that in a cost-effective and manageable manner.''

Inprise plans to begin delivery of its enterprise application server later this year. More
information on the company's enterprise product family is available at inprise.com or
by calling Inprise direct sales at (408) 431-1064. Customers outside the U.S. should contact
their local Inprise office, distributor, or representative.
