Michigan Rummy---
A Treasure Box of Memories..
We spent several summers on Cape Cod in a little yellow cottage called The Treasure Box. I must have been about 5,6,7....my father would join us on the weekends.
We played Michigan at night with toothpicks and pennies. I loved that game. I always spent a lot of time arranging my pennies and toothpicks artistically and neatly. Then Skippy my obnoxious brother, and my mother's favorite, would mess them up and I'd cry.
On Friday nights we would go down to the beach with blankets and watch movies on the sand. I remember seeing Piper Laurie and thinking that was the most beautiful name. I asked everyone to call me Piper but no one would, so I vowed to name my daughter Piper. Luckily I didn't have a daughter. That was also the year I changed my middle name from Anne to Bernadette in school. I wrote it on all my papers. Penni Bernadette Chappell. The school had seen Song of Bernadette and I thought it was a very spiritual name.
On Saturday nights, there would be barricades set up on the street and someone would play records and people would jitterbug. I loved to dance and considered myself very proficient. I danced by myself mostly. At seven, partners are hard to come by. Once a little boy asked me to dance and I burst into tears from embarrassment.
We used to pick little blue periwinkles off the rocks. My father said they were mini-escargots and he boiled them and ate them with a straight pin while we ewwwwed and ughed. He had a strange sense of humor.
