Veridicom Announces Global Program to Create Electronic Fingerprint Identification Solutions
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 1998--Veridicom, Inc., a Lucent Technologies spin-off and a leading supplier of silicon sensor chips, announced today that it has created a cooperative program to provide total solutions for personal computer, data network and personal identification security using fingerprint-based identification technologies.
The Veridicom Integration Partners (VIP) program, announced here at the CardTech SecurTech Conference, joins an initial eight global leaders in the fields of biometrics, information security, access control, computing, software and allied disciplines in a cooperative effort with Veridicom that will facilitate development of fingerprint identification technology in the expanding biometric authentication market. This group of global industry experts and leaders will create a comprehensive set of fingerprint-based, secure identification and authorization solutions, such as personal computer and computer network logons, door and automotive access, and account verification.
''The global information explosion has created a tremendous need for low-cost, easy-to-implement, highly secure verification solutions that can be built into PCs and network access devices, smart cards and personal identification systems,'' said Tom Rowley, president of Veridicom. ''Through the VIP program participants, Veridicom's silicon chip technology, based on Bell Labs innovations, will become the engine for innovative applications that will improve security in a host of applications around the world.''
The initial members of the Veridicom Integration Partners program are:
o Acer America Corp., San Jose, Calif., a member of the Acer Group,
the world's third-largest OEM and brand name manufacturer of
computer components, peripherals, desktops, notebooks and
servers.
o Biometric Identification, Inc., Sherman Oaks, Calif., providing
biometrics- based verification solutions that can be
self-contained or make use of external computer systems for
processing and data storage. The company is a subsidiary of
Arete' Associates, a world leader in sophisticated image analysis
of satellite and high altitude-derived visual imagery.
o Dermalog, Hamburg, Germany, a research and software development
company that specializes in innovative biometric identification
technologies using fingerprints and palm prints that conform with
industry standards, such as Windows NT and UNIX.
o I/O Software, Riverside, Calif., a leading-edge software
developer that supports new technologies for emerging markets.
I/O Software created the Biometric Application Programming
Interface (BAPI), a global standard for secure access control
systems.
o The National Registry (NRI), Tampa, Fla., a biometric software
solutions company focused on security of networks, including
LANs, remote access, and Internet/Intranet. NRI created the Human
Authentication Application Programming Interface (HA-API), which
permits biometric technologies, such as fingerprints, voiceprints
and facial recognition, to be embedded in a common applications
environment.
o Skytale, Hamburg, Germany, a leading producer of data security
products for Microsoft Windows NT, Unix and other major operating
systems, as well as for public and private data networking and
Internet applications.
o TRW Systems Integration Group, Fairfax, Va., a leader in the
development and application of systems engineering, systems
integration, information system and software development products
and services. Automated identification systems are a core market,
meeting needs of law enforcement, elector registration, human
services, immigration and other national identification
applications.
o Utimaco Safeware AG, Oberursel, Germany, which specializes in
development and implementation of notebook/desktop security,
encryption, network security and electronic commerce security.
With 1.3 million licenses sold, Utimaco is a world-leading
supplier of information technology and PC security systems.
VIP program participants will have early access to Veridicom's latest technology developments. ''Veridicom is dedicated to enabling best-in-class companies to provide the integrated total security solutions customers have been seeking,'' said Rowley. ''By combining outstanding hardware and software platforms and solutions in conformance with emerging industry standards, we expect this program will significantly expand the business opportunities for all our valued program participants.''
Rowley noted that the market for secure, affordable and reliable identification and authorization has risen dramatically as more people store and access more data on PCs and in networks. ''As individual companies acting alone we would struggle to make this market grow and prosper. By working together, we can accelerate creation and acceptance of complete customer solutions.''
Veridicom's sensor chips and peripherals have been available since November 1997. Last March, the company teamed with Germany's Cherry GmbH, Giesecke & Devrient, and Utimaco to demonstrate a secure, convenient computer access system that integrates Veridicom's fingerprint sensor chip, Cherry's Convenient Access keyboard, G&D's smart card and reader, and Utimaco's software.
