By forcing vacations, the company is able to reduce liability without increasing costs. The cost remains the same as without vacation because the same amount will be paid to the employees. So the company is able to get 2x bang for the buck, both employees are paid as normal and liability is reduced. I believe every employee is being asked to take 15 days of vacation or no-pay in the next two quarters, every other Friday for the next couple of months, 1 week of shutdown around the 4th, and another week of shutdown in late August. Additionally, a restructuring occurred this week in RTP resulting in a reduction of approximately 60 positions and a redeployment program has been in effect company-wide for several months.

I would not be surprised if this quarter's anouncement gives further indication of the severity of the present downturn. Reports from each business group are bleak, except possibly for CMP.
