DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (April 29, 1998 2:43 p.m. EDT nando.net) - Looking for that perfect party music mix? Platinum Entertainment Inc. says make it yourself.
The independent music label said Wednesday it is developing a Web site where customers can download CD-quality music to their computers and create customized compact disks at home, combining The Beach Boys with the Royal Philharmonic, for example.
The news sent Platinum Entertainment's stock up more than 15 percent. In was up $1.50 at $13.375 in afternoon trading on Nasdaq.
To make their own CDs, users need a CD recorder and software -- which they will be able to order from Platinum Entertainment's Web site for about $200 -- but they can also have their customized CDs mailed to them.
The service is expected to be in place in the third quarter. Prices will be comparable to retail CDs, a spokesman said.
Customized CDs must be compiled from Platinum Entertainment's own library of 12,000 blues, pop, classical, gospel, country, new age and urban/dance music titles, along with new releases by various artists. Some 500,000 commercially available titles will also be on hand for purchase online.
Platinum joined with computer software and services company Platinum Technology Inc., of Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., in developing the service.
Music samples and live broadcasts of interviews and performances will also be available online.
