Frank,

You have been going around the block on VoIP for some time now so I would like to get your opinion on these announcements from Cisco. It seems to me they may have raised the bar here. If they have built equipment that is really giving less than 125mS of voice delay across the United States, they are quickly approaching the delay of circuit switch, which I understand to be in the 70-90mS range.

I also find it interesting that their gateway which is operating at the IP layer is faster than any of the layer 2 FRADs and ATM AAL5 solutions for which I have data for.

The third item that I find most exciting is the quality of service level that GTE is experiencing. Certainly the knock on voice over IP is that the voice quality degrades badly during periods of network congestion. If that problem gets solved sooner than later, it seems like this could really accelerate the adoption of VoIP.

I would be interested in your analysis here, especially since you talk to people in the 'know' about VoIP on a regular basis.

Thanks, and keep posting.
