David,

You might be confusing Avid's video servers (which have not generated any appreciable benefit to Avid's bottom line) with Avid's newsroom automation products (the new products I was mentioning). Avid acquired two companies several years ago ('94 or '95) which together dominated the market for newsroom automation - asset management, story editing/creation, etc. These were not necessarily video related products. Also, these products where extremely aged, yet still accounted for a bulk of the installed seats in that segment. In other words: the marketplace was just dying for a major upgrade.

This major upgrade became available a few months ago. I've not seen the result but I understand it is extremely well received. Also, the newer version can incorporate video in ways which were not possible before. This means additional Avid video systems might be sold into new shops which were entirely non-digital before.

Again, this isn't a product like newscutter, or airplay. It's more like a comprehensive word processing environment incorporating video for news writers.
