Toshiba, M'bishi, Fujitsu To Suspend DRAM Output In Golden Week

TOKYO (Nikkei)-Major semiconductor makers Toshiba Corp. (6502), Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (6503) and Fujitsu Ltd. (6702) plan to shut down chip assembly lines for the Golden Week holiday period, industry sources said. The manufacturers, which face losses in the DRAM business due to price falls, aim to curtail output to shore up prices.

Toshiba will stop running all its DRAM production lines at its plant in Mie Prefecture from April 29 through May 5. The lines at its plant in Oita Prefecture will also be closed, with the exception of those making system LSIs.

Toshiba closed chip production lines for six days during Golden Week last year.

Mitsubishi will close its plants in Kumamoto and Fukuoka prefectures for seven straight days, losing output of 800,000 64M DRAMs as a result.

Mitsubishi kept its chip lines open during Golden Week last year.

Fujitsu will shut down all the company's three domestic chip plants for six days, but will continue to produce some logic ICs.

NEC Corp. (6701) and Hitachi Ltd. (6501) say they have no plans to stop assembly lines during the holiday period.
