The actress and composer George Antheil jointly patented a defense communications device in the 1940s. They were unsuccessful in selling the concept then, either to the military or commercial sectors.

But when the patent expired in the 1950s, Sylvania engineers independently developed a similar concept for the Defense Department, according to a 1997 Los Angeles Times article -- one that is now used in the military's $25 billion MIL-STAR defense communications satellite system.
