Time Traveller:

<<K6 was competing against the P/MMX. Now P/MMX has been phased out. K6 is living on borrowed time.>>

You must be dreaming buddy. The K6 is sold out and is a hot item. K6 has breath more life to socket 7 which INTC wants to kill. The 100MHz MB will extend the socket 7 and K6 even longer. Every hobbyists who want to upgrade their Pentium want a K6. K6 is the Formula 1 of the Pentium. Knowledgeable people prefer K6 to Pentium. Did you notice all the press talk about the sales of PII versus K6? NOT Pentium vs. K6! Your perception is not TUNED man.

This brings me to another point. In the article Yougang posted on the K6-3D

"By using 2 operations (32-bit) in one 64 bit register, and 2 pipelines, the AMD K6-3D will be able to improve their graphics performance dramatically. There won't be any context switching between floating point and integer math. That should get some programmers excited. There isn't any overlap with the MMX technology. There also isn't any overlap with the Intel Katmai Instructions that
will be out in 1999."

Buddy grab a seat and prepare to watch the show. The K6-3D with DirectX 6.0 and 100MHz supersocket 7 will make PII of same clock frequency like Bambie. I have seen the demoed version and it is kick ass. AMD spokeman said that a version of QUAKE for the K6-3D will be out soon. The 3D technology is unique. It is the CPU that does the 3D calculation at CPU speed not at PCI bus speed. AMD-3D circuitry is something that INTC doesn't have. Infrastructure is already in place to make the AMD-3D successful and THE STANDARD. Intel will license from AMD. So don't laugh at floating point of AMD chips. AMD may have the last laugh.

<<Believe me I have done my own share of homework. My intention here is not to ridicule anyone even myself, rather very different goal than yours I guess.>>

What homework have you done? Have you seen the K6-3D in action prior to your conclusion? Have you seen the Celeron in action? Do you know how many PII-333/350/400 was sold compared to PII/233/266/300? Do you know what consumers think of PII/Celeron/etc.?

One thing I learn in life is that nothing is certain. Just because Intel made good money yesterday doesn't guarantee that they make good money in the future. 15 years ago who would have thought giant DEC would be bought out by a company that was not even borned yet. The same goes with MSFT vs NOVL. Your homework so far has discounted all the inroad AMD has made on the K6. Just 2 years ago AMD was almost wiped out of the CPU business. No one expected them to come back and give Intel a run for their money. Back then Intel Inside was an unbreakable symbol. Nowaday no one gives a hoot. If you go back and study this case slowly you would have learned that AMD has SNEAKED up on Intel and has successfully weakened INTC dominant position. AMD will be a major player whether Intel like it or not.
