[Globespan Raises The ADSL Ante]
Globespan Semiconductor Inc., a pioneer of Digital Subscriber Line technology, is raising the stakes for companies that want to offer faster data access over phone lines and stick to the developing industry standards. The company in mid-April announced technology that will allow telephone companies to reach a much higher percentage of their customers with xDSL-based service.
...The Globespan technology extends the service area of Asymmetric DSL to 26,000 feet from a central office, or 30 percent beyond the technology being developed by the standards group, known as the Universal ADSL Working Group (UAWG). It thus helps solve a key problem of ADSL deployment for telephone companies by making the technology available to a higher percentage of their customers.
...But Geday is convinced that other telephone companies may follow the lead of U S West Communications Group, which decided to push ahead with ADSL deployment while waiting for the UAWG standard and is using NetSpeed's CAP-based system.
..."The quicker we can get this into the market, the more likely it is we can persuade the carriers that it makes more sense to use what works, and what you have now," he said. "We have years of field experience with this technology, which is not something that the other folks can say."
