Well, you have to have an audited statement of a company's financials. There is some element of risk even when you have financials that have been audited by an outside accounting firm, and without that how could you possibly know what a company's numbers are? With numbers quoted over the phone there would be no guarantee of accuracy, or even of the absence of outright fraud. Surely this company has publicly released financials on file. I'm very curious as to why they wouldn't be on file at EDGAR, as all public companies have had to file electronically for about three years now.
