other Prophets of Doom that come to my mind are: Paul Erdman and Henry Kaufman (Kaufmann?), allthough I think that Kaufman is not as bearish anymore, at least not in public. I never really took either of them serious.

I have to admit I never read a book by Batra myself. These doom books normally make a good read, but somehow they seem to miss something as things invariably turn out differently. The studies by the Club of Rome back in the 70ies I think also fall in this category.
