Thursday April 30, Ashanti Q1 gold production up 14 pct

LONDON, April 30 (Reuters) - Ashanti Goldfields Co Ltd (AGC.GH) said on Thursday that first quarter gold production was up 14 percent at 331,414 ounces.

Pre-tax profit in the three months to March 31, 1998, was $15.0 million from $16.2 million in the same period last year. Turnover was $133.7 million versus $132.3.

Earnings per share at the group was unchanged at 14 cents.

Ashanti said the cash cost of its gold production was $237 per ounce, down nine percent.
