Town Wants to Be a Telco
Wired News Report
3:01pmÿÿ29.Apr.98.PDT
The Massachusetts town that's sold electric power to its residents and
businesses for 90 years and has provided them community-owned cable TV
for the past 15 now wants to offer long-distance telephone service.
The plan would make Shrewsbury, a town of 13,000 an hour's drive west of
Boston, one of the nation's first municipalities to offer such a
service, the Boston Globe reports.

Shrewsbury intends to enter the highly competitive market in an effort
to increase revenues and hold down taxes. The town also can consolidate
electricity, cable, and long distance on one monthly bill.

"Call this entrepreneurial government -- that is what we are doing,"
Thomas Josie, general manager of Shrewsbury Light & Power, told the
newspaper.

Shrewsbury reportedly will buy long distance from Sprint and plans to
begin offering service on 1 May.
