I guess, the most progressive communists understood that it
was better for them to get money rather than benefits. Under
the old rule, once you were gone, so were your benefits (a
wonderful apt., the privilege to buy things in special
stores where ordinary people could not show up, etc.). Now
you are gone, the money stays - a lot more strain on the
Russian people. So the new political bosses try to
grab as much as they can while they can. A lot about this
is written in the press. So my excitement over the possibility
of all these new things is gone (I was extremely excited
about things you could read in Russian press 10 years ago).
Russia still has a long way to go towards a truly democratic
society. But so far, at least, it's on the way. As for Nemtsov -
I hope we were looking at the web site of the next Russian
president. -Vi
