Pfizer's Viagra Demand Prompts Tighter Security, Paper Says

Bloomberg News
April 30, 1998, 9:34 a.m. PT

drug Viagra is in such strong demand that some drug store chains
are tightening security to prevent thefts, the Chicago Tribune
reported. The drug, which has been prescribed more than 145,000
times in its first two weeks of release, could be a prime
candidate for theft and illegal resale because of its relatively
high price of $10 a pill and the lack of coverage by some
insurance carriers. While no widespread theft of the drug has
been reported, Walgreen Co. distributed a memo last week urging
pharmacists to take security precautions similar to those used in
handling expensive drugs for AIDS treatment, the paper said.

Viagra sales could reach $1 billion in its first full year
on the market, even if health plans put strict conditions on
reimbursing pill purchases and men must pay for the drug
themselves, analysts said this week.
