SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1998 APR 29 (NB) -- By Jacqueline Emigh, Newsbytes. At IT (Information Technology) Forum today, IBM [NYSE:IBM] and Sun [NASDAQ:SUNW] announced a joint initiative to optimize IBM's DB2 Universal Database for high scalability on Sun Enterprise Server and StorEdge platforms; to port IBM's Intelligent Miner and DB2 OLAP (online analytical processing) Server to Solaris; and to work with Merisel and Infospace on a bundle for World Wide Web-based business intelligence.

In an interview with Newsbytes, Jeff Jones, program manager, data management marketing, maintained that the move to tune DB2 to Sun platforms is an "engineering-to-engineering effort" being driven by customer demand in the Sun space.

"I expect this to turn into benchmarks and user stories," Jones told Newsbytes.

IBM and Sun plan to focus the scalability optimization effort on Sun's Enterprise 10000 "Starfire" Server, he observed.

The new business intelligence bundle for the Web, on the other hand, will operate on Sun's Enterprise 450 workgroup server. The bundle will combine DB2 Universal Database with SpaceSQL (structured query language), a "100 percent pure Java" query-reporting and analysis server produced by Infospace. Merisel will distribute the bundle throughout North America, according to the IBM exec.

"This will be the first of a number of bundles," the program manager told Newsbytes.

Also today, IBM and Sun are launching beta tests of both Intelligent Miner and DB2 OLAP Server running on Solaris, Jones pointed out, adding that it's possible these two combinations might also evolve into bundles.

Jones asserted that IBM experienced 60 percent growth of its database and related data management software from fourth quarter 1996 to fourth quarter 1997, and 110 percent growth from first quarter 1997 to first quarter 1998.

IBM, he noted, is now establishing a new team of 300 dedicated salespeople for data management software, to be led by newly appointed VP of Sales Tom Kendra, who was previously VP of marketing for the division.

IBM is located at ibm.com on the Web. Sun is at sun.com .
