Drawing Blood From techstocks.com .....By law, hospitals are required to do a PKU test on newborns (requires drawing blood). Therefore, no matter how great the CCSI device is, blood will always be drawn from newborns...... .......Bilirubin is fairly common in babies and can be very dangerous (cause mental retardation). If it is suspected, then blood is drawn and sent to the lab. The lab takes up to 1 hour or so to report their findings. In the mean time, the baby is put under a Bilirubin lamp (no big deal). It is fairly common to continue to monitor the Bilirubin levels in the baby to see how they are progressing........ Also, in determining the size of the market for bilirubin testing CCSI did not include the test that is a part of a general panel.
