Gary,

Thanks for your comments. Maybe it's time to wind down this conversation. You're right that we are at a standstill.

ATM is a connection-oriented protocol just like the public phone system. It does not reroute in the event of congestion. If a switch is busy, then you get a recording asking you to politely try again at another time. ATM is like that.

ATM VC's are static. If QoS needs to change then a new VC must be built. If the
network fails a new VC must be built. There are no two ways around this one.
BTW: congestion is a result of a line failure...or I should say it can be.

When does a VC need to change QoS? I can't think of an example of this. If a different type of data with different priority needs to be sent, then it will go down a different VC with a different QoS.

Well, in all due respect...if a trunk is congested and a second one is not a VC will
be rerouted to take advantage of the bandwidth on the alternate path. This reroute
requires a VC to be moved...torn down and rebuilt. Therefore to the VC
congestion might as well be a topology change..

I don't think so. VC's don't get rerouted. You said yourself that VC's are static. This is not a dynamic protocol. I think you're getting IP mixed up with ATM.

Hmmmmm, I'm not certain that Cisco has designs on placing routers in the "core"
proper of service provider networks. That's why they bought StrataCom. They
understand the need for ATM. However, they are indeed behind ASND on their
development and launch.

This is what Packet-over-Sonet is. Routers map their IP packets directly on to high-speed SONET envelopes. Yes, Cisco wants routers in the core.
