The question is, do these servers use ESDRAM? Ramtron should donate the ESDRAM if not, just to get the PR.

MAYNARD, Mass., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE:DEC) today announced that Samsung Austin Semiconductor selected a $5 million AlphaServer and Digital UNIX solution to support the operations of its new manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. In addition, Digital provides mission-critical, 24x7 Gold Support Service and support to ensure the highest level of availability for Samsung's high-performance manufacturing environment.

A division of Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd., the world's largest producer of DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory), Samsung Austin Semiconductor is Samsung's first manufacturing facility built outside of Korea. The $1.3 billion, 180-acre facility produces up to 12,000 wafers per month which are shipped to South Korea for processing and sold to major computer manufacturers, including Dell Computer, IBM and Compaq Computer Corporation.

With this new facility requiring 100 percent reliability and efficiency to increase its competitiveness against other manufacturers, Samsung selected Digital to provide a higher-performance manufacturing environment with a greater depth of mission-critical support. Digital installed six AlphaServer 8400s, two AlphaServer 4000s and two AlphaServer 4100s operating Digital UNIX to run the facility's databases as well as maintain client/server operations and manage equipment integration.

Samsung evaluated other high-performance server solutions before selecting Digital. Key benchmark criteria included performance, hardware and software compatibility, and reliability.

"Digital came out on top," said Kevin Watters, manager of factory automation at Samsung Austin Semiconductor. "AlphaServers have a high performance level, run our internal custom software on UNIX smoothly and are highly reliable. Reliability is most important to us."

Since the solution has been installed, Digital's services and support has played a key role in ensuring reliable manufacturing operations on a daily basis. "We receive excellent support and rapid response time from Digital Service professionals -- the fab is up and running beautifully every day," said Watters.
