David - Re: "where and how you see RMBS technology fitting into INTC's plans, they look a fairly key element in improving overall performance, "

Rambus's new RDRAM memory technology, with 800 Megabyte/Sec to 1.3 Gigabyte/Sec throughput is an essential part of the Merced platform.

Merced needs a fantastic flow of data/memory and any slowdown here will restrict performance. To that end, memory with RAMBUS technology is being designed in to the Intel chip sets for Merced.

In the shorter term, Katmai (Intel's follow on to the Deschutes) may also use RAMBUS technology (as well as SLDRAM and SDRAM) via the Camino chip set.

Camino is targeted for late 1998 - although Katmai may appear sooner - A LOT SOONER. I think the 440BX will work with KATMAI and we may possibly see systems with this combination (440 BX/Katmai) due the advanced state of the Katmai project.
