Maybe the feds and state AG's should spend a little time and resources prosecuting the real criminals.

Right. Gotta go back a week or so to answer this one. From infoworld.com :

Microsoft's existence depends on enforcement of intellectual property laws. Just like you and me, it has to obey the others, too -- it doesn't get to pick and choose.

You should look up Alan Buckley some time, this is an old argument, popular among Objectivists. The sanctity of intellectual property law vs. the obscenely unfair and irrelevant antitrust laws. Microsoft has it well within its means to do something about piracy if it wishes, I assume the various registration/automatic update things coming out with Win98 are a step in that direction. Meanwhile, you'll be happy to know that the only issue that ever seems to be a topic worthy of bringing up with Bill's friends in China when the State department contingent heads over that way is how to get those darn Chinese to pay for Bill's software. I hear you can still get it pretty cheap in Hong Kong. Human rights, democracy, who cares about those naive civic virtues when there's money to be made. And the politically naive software engineer always seems to be doing fine getting new laws passed here criminalizing things more.

You also might want to take it up with Reggie, who always used to lecture us on how Netscape software was free too. When it was brought up that that's not what the license said, the reply was always "ha ha ha whata buncha suckers". Bill's got plenty of suckers too, in more than one sense.

Cheers, Dan.
