Hubbell: They want me to lie
WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) _ Former Associate Attorney General Webster Hubbell says he is innocent of tax fraud charges and insists a 10-count indictment against him, his wife and two friends is an attempt to get him to lie.
Hubbell says the tax-related indictment is an attempt by independent counsel Kenneth Starr to get him to lie about President Clinton and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and adds, ''I will not do so.''
In a statement for cameras in front of his Washington home today, Hubbell said in part:
''This has obviously been a very difficult day...especially since the Office of the independent counsel has decided to indict my wife and two of my best friends.
''Obviously, it's apparent to me that they think by indicting my wife and my friends that I will lie about the president and the first lady. I will not do so, and my wife would not want me to do so.
''I want you to know that the Office of Independent Counsel can indict my dog, they can indict my cat, but I'm not going to lie about the president, I'm not going to lie about the first lady, or anyone else.
''My wife and I are innocent of the charges that have been brought today. My lawyer will address all of those matters. I will not talk about the matters regarding the indictment other than to say we are innocent.
''And I hope that you (the media) and the American people will afford us the protection of the Constitution that ensures we are innocent until proven guilty.
''We will fight these charges, and I personally will fight any attempt to get me to lie about the president or the first lady.''
Ah, correct me if I'm wrong, a Grand Jury indicted him, not the office of the Independent counsel.
The media grants constitutional rights?
