Massachusetts' Largest Insurers to Pay for Viagra, for Now
Boston, April 30 (Bloomberg) -- Massachusetts' four largest health insurers will pay for treatment using Pfizer Inc.'s impotence pill Viagra while they observe its use, the Boston Globe reported. The decision of Tufts Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts Inc. and Fallon Healthcare Systems is in contrast to Aetna Inc.'s US Healthcare and Prudential Insurance Co. of America's HealthCare unit, which say they want more evidence of the treatment's effectiveness before they reimburse. Whether some state insurers pay for the pills, which have a wholesale price of $7, may eventually be decided by a 1987 Massachusetts law that recognizes fertility promotion procedures endorsed by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine or the American College of Obstetricians, the paper said.
Viagra sales could reach $1 billion in the drug's first full year on the market even, if health plans put strict conditions on paying for the pills and men have to buy the drug themselves, analysts said this week.
