David, I'm going to say that for BAY this is NOT good news. Last year, Bay bought outright a privately held company who had a dominant position in the cable modem trials that were going on - one of the reasons I bought Bay. I knew COMS was moving into the business; but discounted it. My logic at the time was that of all the competitors, Bay (1) had a strong position and (2) could offer an end-to-end solution. Good story in my mind for BAY.

Story was punctured by another person on the BAY thread a few weeks later who said that Bay was using the cable modem market to shill its headend solutions. The conclusion was that Bay's headend business notwithstanding, the modems wouldn't pass the standards gate. Good, credible response; but I didn't take any action.

Well now, here's TCI... One of the largest MSOs in the universe - and Bay wins only a part of the whole procurement? And, not a nickel's worth of the cable modem business?? You can argue that part of a deal is better than nothing at all - and you won't be wrong. But... This is NOT the kind of win that is going to dramatically change Bay's fortunes, In my opinion.
