Posted at 7:19 PM PT, Apr 30, 1998 SAN FRANCISCO -- At the Hambrecht and Quist 26th Annual Technology Conference here Thursday, H&Q analysts picked their favorite companies for financial success and major industry trends in the upcoming year.
Analysts said that business services providers will become increasingly involved in providing implementation services in addition to products. Top company picks included American Business Services, Transaction Network, and Renaissance Worldwide.
Major telecommunication trends for 1998 and 1999, H&Q analysts said, will be migration of networks toward IP-based networks, local loop technology in the WAN arena, and massive changes in the international carrier landscape. Top picks for 1998 include Advanced Fiber Communications and Teleglobe.
In the burgeoning Internet space, analysts picked America Online, Pixar, U.S. Web, Intuit, CBT Systems, and Broadvision as good companies in which investors should put their money. In particular, analysts said that a big trend in the upcoming year will be the use of online financial services for bill presentation and bill payment.
Large banks, such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo, already offer users the ability to manage their banking accounts and pay bills over the Web. Analysts said these services will become more sophisticated and more often used in 1998.
In the area of enterprise software, analyst Jim Pickrel said that successful companies will emphasize the value of the enterprise software application layer, vs. the infrastructure layer that includes the database and tools. Pickrel's top pick for 1998 is Remedy Corp.
Pickrel also said that Siebel Systems and Vantive Software, two companies that help companies manage customer relationships, are good investments.
