Paul - Intel has refined their control a lot in the last 5 years. CPQ went without 'red book' access for quite a while after they first decided to use Cirix in the desktop line in 93 and 94. Digital got much more of a cold shoulder. There is a lot more on some of the internal I/O bus plans (obviously can't go into detail here on a public forum), which Intel uses in its arsenal of tricks to keep its customer base in line. Intel is a smart, aggressive company and I have a lot of respect for them. But it would be naive to think that the kind of activities they currently engage in, and the intent of those policies, would not interest the DOJ. I also think that Intel's support among its biggest customers is a lot softer than MSFT's. I hate to see ANY government involvement in the activities of this industry but frankly I think Intel's tactics over the last few years invite exactly this kind of unwelcome intervention.
