Salomon Says Compaq Is Reducing Bloated Inventories

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Salomon Smith Barney analyst Richard Gardner said Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) is reducing the bloated inventories that caused its disappointing first-quarter results.

Gardner, explaining his upgrade of the stock to buy from neutral, said Compaq has cut back on PC production, which is helping to reduce the unsold backlog of computers.

He also said Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC), which Compaq agreed to purchase in January, should add more to earnings in 1999 than he had previously estimated.

Compaq should also have an easier year-over-year comparison in the second half of 1998, since the average selling price of Compaq PCs began to fall in the second half last year.

Gardner expects Compaq's earnings to decline in 1998 compared with 1997. But he boosted his earnings estimates to 55 cents a share for 1998 from 33 cents a share and to $1.51 a share for 1999 from $1.34 a share.
