>> why would any of the users want to buy a Sony or LS-120 drive that is backwards compatible with a drive they already have? <<

For the same reason they want to buy a Zip or LS-120. HiFD offers more technical advantages than both Zip and LS-120. Zip has more install base but if Sony really can deliver what its promised, it will take around 18 months to beat Zip in market share (assume Zip continues to sell 1M OEM and retail per months and HiFD on 20% of new PC, NO RETAIL SALE!).

>> Regardless, it is clear to me that LS-120 is not selling well vis-a-vis the Zip drive. If as you say, mass production of the LS-120 has been in full gear for less than a year, it still hasn't sold well. Available supply of LS-120 has not been a problem. <<

You may want to study more about marketing.
Reason why LS-120 still not selling well:
1. LS-120 is slower
2. Too late to reach mass production, Zip has already passed 10M mark at that time.
3. Media too expensive.
Nevertheless, you can now buy GW2k with LS-120 at a cheaper price than Zip + Floppy.

Why HiFD doesn't share the same problem as LS-120 imo:
1. It is slightly faster than Zip Plus and significantly faster than LS-120.
2. It is much bigger than LS-120 and Zip.
3. Media is cheaper than Zip and drive is about the same but you save the $$$ of floppy drive.
4. Back by two major OEM suppliers. I wonder if Fujitsu and Mitsumi will follow step.
The biggest problem of HiFD is that it is not available yet. If it is not available before holiday season, potential buyers will become inpatient and simply buy the Zip instead (similar to LS120).
