Byron and all,
I received this email with some interesting questions, any comments would be helpful. Thanks...
Scott *************************************** I did some thinking about this TLK/DGIV, and came to some conclusions. This is just my opinion, so it may or may not be correct.
In Indonesia, there are 2 big telephone companies, Telkom (TLK) and Indosat (IIT). Telkom provides local telephone service while Indosat provides long distance/international. There is another company, Satelindo, which is in long distance service too, but I will not cover this it in this posting.
Since TLK and IIT have different service, they are not competing with each other. The situation changed when DGIV came into play. DGIV technology allows customers to make long distance calls and pay local fee. So, TLK can use DGIV to compete with IIT in long distance business. The advantage of TLK/DGIV is lower price. You can see that this is a zero sum game between TLK/DGIV and IIT.
Now, what's the disadvantage of DGIV technology ? There are 2:
1. To use DGIV internet telephony service you will need a special device. This device looks like a phone/fax device, maybe bigger. I don't know the price of this device, it may be expensive in Indonesia, especially after the devaluation. OTOH, companies who pay a big long distance bill may want to save on the bill and buy the device.
2. The quality of the voice may not as good as ordinary phone. DGIV success will greatly depends on these 2 factors. |
