SHARP is optimistic of securing15 per cent of the local market share for
video compact disk (VCD) and digital videodisk (DVD) systems this year.
Managing director of Sharp-Roxy Sales and
Service Co (M) Sdn Bhd Masatohi Fujiki said
the company also hopes to increase itsoverall growth of user base by another 10
per cent compared to seven per cent lastyear.
He said the bullish sentiment is based on the
positive outlook of the local audio and video
markets which is expected to be boosted by
the availability of more movie titles.
According to Fujiki, unit sales of VCD players
of various brands are expected to exceed
the 145,000 mark for this year, while over
40,000 units of DVD players are expected tobe sold by the end of this year.
Last year, the total number of VCD players
sold amounted to 100,000 units while salesfor DVD players were 14,000 units.
'Statistics reveal that during the first three
months of 1997, about 25,000 units of VCD
players were sold, compared to over 30,000
units during the same period of this year.
'The increase in sales of the VCD and DVD
players is due to the fact that there are
more titles available now in the market and
many companies are importing the disks andsoftware.
