It won't be approved unless it's proved both safe and effective.

Regitine is available from Ciba-Geigy as an (expensive) injectable, and phentolamine USP is available by the gram from Sigma-Aldrich, RBI, etc.

It's an easy experiment. I'm quite puzzled that no one here seems to have tried it.

Judgements as to the safety of the proposed self-referential experiment would seem to be well within the sphere of discretion routinely exercised by physicians who prescribe off-label medications.

Blood pressure could be taken before the experiment to ensure that hypotension was not present. Any adverse hypotensive effects from the medication would likely be short-lived.
