Ike,

It appears that you are not alone in this opinion.

On the positive side for MSFT, people should be aware of a new product entitled Plato. This is MSFT's entry into the multi-dimensional database market which currently is comprised of products from Arbor (one of Mr. Lamb's favorites), Oracle, and Hyperion (HYSW - one of my favorites) among others.

I think the multi-dimensional database and OLAP (On-line analytical processing) software market is going to grow exponentially in the next few years. For the past several years, most organizations have been building huge transactional systems and databases. However, unless you've got a large IT budget, there are no easy means to analyze these large quantities of data. OLAP grants the end user the ability to get at meaningful data in a way that they can easily understand. One of the real keys to OLAP is that the end user spends more time analyzing data than trying to collect it. Also, there is much less dependence on an IT department because the query process is intuitive to an end user.

That's my two cents. If anyone wants more information, here's a good place to start: olapcouncil.org
