H.Wai,

I know first-hand that the ability of Ascend's switches to read IP headers was a primary driver for AT&T's selection of Ascend. I would venture to guess that it's also one of the primary reasons that QWEST, GTE, Williams, and NTT chose Ascend over their respective incumbent equipment vendors. It doesn't take much to reason that Level 3 will also choose Ascend for this "smart switch" feature, especially because Level 3 was chartered to provide IP services.

I would guess this smart capability is missing from the Fore switches, and is probably what Mory was refering to when he mentioned the "less-capable" Fore switches at the conference. Fore is a founding member of the ATM forum, and supports MPOA, which is a different (more cumbersome?) way of mapping IP to ATM. Anyone have any comments on this?
