Clintons Cherish Times With Chelsea

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton admitted what her well-heeled audience already suspected: The intimate, $600,000 fund-raising dinner was really an excuse ''to sneak in some time with our daughter.''

President Clinton and his wife borrowed the estate of computer magnate Steve Jobs -- tucked deep into the eucalyptus groves of Portola Valley -- for their own private Parents Weekend with Chelsea, a freshman at nearby Stanford University.

''Everyone in the family is fine about what a great year she's had except for me, who still thinks it's too far away,'' Mrs. Clinton said at Friday night's fund-raiser, where two dozen couples ponied up $25,000 apiece for the Democratic National Committee.

''She's doing very well. She's very happy,'' Mrs. Clinton reported.

Saturday was reserved for private family time at the secluded Jobs home, with its tennis courts and swimming pool.

The president, who traveled to California with the usual coterie of aides and reporters in tow, lamented that he was unable to visit his daughter at college as other parents can.

''It's hard for the president to do anything without attracting any notice,'' he said. ''I can hardly just wake up one morning and decide, 'I think I'll go have dinner with Chelsea -- just get on Air Force One and fly to California. No one will know.'''

This was the Clintons' first visit to Palo Alto since they dropped Chelsea off at school last September. They had planned to come for Stanford's Parents Weekend in February, which coincided with Chelsea's 18th birthday, but she abruptly decided the family would ski Utah instead<<
