Jon,

>I personally wonder how much $$$ Microsoft pays for these stunts

MS doesn't pay for them. They work them to their advantage. They issue a press release two or three hours before deadline, effectively precluding other parties from commenting on the materials. If the reporter delays the story, they lose the "news" to other rags (so that's not going to happen). The result is that the press release effectively runs as the story.

This is common practice, and doesn't make MS "evil" or Novell "stupid".

There are two ways to counter this: First of all, make damn sure that the PR department answers the friggin telephone -- especially on deadline day! Returning a call the next business day won't do any good. Second, play this game yourself by issuing your own "strategic customer" releases.
