MSB, I agree with you, there are varying degrees of racism everywhere. In the towns and villages of Chiapas there can be strong feeling between the mexicanos, who are mestizos of mixed blood, and the indios, who consider themselves purer and have different ways. Each side distrusts the other, incidents between them flare up at times, and much blood has been shed over the years.
Of course, these two parties can be quite united at times in their fear and loathing and mistrust and disgust of the gerros, those pallid money-grubbing norteamericanos whose long sordid history of theft from and exploitation of M‚xico continues to this day, aided by the yuppie Chilango wannabe estadounidenses. One common T-shirt saying - "Comemos los Gerros" - 'Let's Eat the Blondes'.
How nice that we of the SI community can rise above this sort of smallmindedness, and with our thought-formed electrons attempt to define a higher standard.
