I think it comes down to whether you think a portfolio manager can beat the market or not. I believe most can't, simply because they ARE the market plus fund expenses. But some can. Hire them.

I don't know how to do this, unless you happen to know the fund manager personally. Some people choose funds based on past performance, but how do you know the good performance wasn't just luck? Further, the high performing funds attract money, and then the fund is too big to beat the market no matter how good the manager is.

There are so many funds now that the active managers are, in effect, subsidizing the index funds. It's not practical, but ideally someone should be arb'ing this away by buying the index and shorting the managed funds...
